The best of Burgundy in two days

Discovery of Nothern Burgundy, Auxerre, Chablis then Beaune, the 'Côte de Beaune' wine route and the 'Grands crus' wine route

2 days - 1 night

  • Day 1

    Auxerre and Chablis

Departure from Paris to Auxerre (2h30 drive).

Arrival in Auxerre, capital of the Yonne department. The majority of the French departments get their names after rivers flowing through.
The Yonne is also the main left bank tributary of the Seine.
Therefore, we could say that it is the Yonne river, rather than the Seine river, which flows through Paris all the way to the English Channel.

In Auxerre, stroll around the heart of the old historic center with its 'Gros Horloge' and half-timbered houses.
Visit the impressive Saint-Germain complex, including the very old Saint-Germain Abbey and the remarkable Saint-Etienne Cathedral.
We will also appreciate the breathtaking view of Auxerre from the bridge.

    Lunch at Auxerre.

Of all the Yonne area, Chablis posesses the only 'Grand Cru' of the department, with Chardonnay as its grape variety.
We will pass through the most recognized areas of the vineyard and continue with a tasting of the best wines at a renown Estate.

Towards the Yonne river, we take the opportunity to drive through the 'Route des Crêtes' (ridge road) in Irancy to appreciate an extraordinary panorama of the vineyards, colorful and contrasting.
We will then visit the Bailly Lapierre cellars and its underground stone quarry, where the 'Crémant de Bourgogne' gets its birthplace.

We will drive further south along the Yonne river and the Nivernais Canal and pass the impressive Rocher du Saussois.

Overnight at the Vault de Lugny castle-hotel.
    Alternative: Island Castle Hotel.
